PUUNENE, Hawaii (AP) - The Maui Humane Society says it's euthanized more than 5,000 animals over the past year.

The organization says this is less than the year before, but still too many. The society's CEO, Jocelyn Bouchard, told The Maui News (http://bit.ly/qMOict ) the figure underscores the need for people to spay or neuter their pets to curb the overpopulation of animals on Maui.

Many animals left at the shelter are either adopted or returned to their owners. But many others are put down when the shelter has no more space.

The society said Thursday it euthanized 5,174 animals in the fiscal year from July 2010 through June. That's 1.5% less than the previous year.

It received 9,402 animals during the most recent fiscal year, an average of nearly 26 per day.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Authorities say a 41-year-old Hawaii man is dead after crashing a vehicle into a palm tree on a street just off Las Vegas Boulevard.

The Clark County coroner on Friday identified the dead man as Jashua Choy of Honolulu.

Las Vegas police say the 2010 Suzuki SX4 veered across the road and rolled onto its side in the crash about 2:40 a.m. Thursday on Warm Springs Road near Windy Street.
